What stays on your device, and what doesn’t.

Effective October 4, 2026

Aurisma is a hearing loss simulator made by me, Julie Sandburg. It's built so that what you bring to it, like your audiogram, your hearing test results, and your recordings, stays on your device. This page explains what that means, and the few things that do leave it.

In short

  • There are no accounts, ads, analytics, tracking, or cookies.
  • Your profiles, hearing test results, and settings are stored in your browser, on your device only. I never receive them.
  • Audio you open, record, or play through your microphone never leaves your browser.
  • Only two things leave your device, and only when you choose: a share link, and a message you send through the contact form.

What stays on your device

  • Your profiles, test results, and settings are saved in your browser's storage: your custom profiles, hearing test results, and settings like the profile you last used, volume, theme, and where you put the player.
  • Audio files, recordings, and live microphone sound are processed in memory by your browser. They aren't uploaded, and they aren't saved anywhere, not even in your browser's storage. They're gone when you close or reload the page. If you download the simulated version of a sound, that file is made on your device and saved straight to it.
  • The hearing test runs entirely in your browser. Its printable report is made by your browser's print dialog.
  • The offline copy of the site that your browser keeps, so the simulator works without a connection, holds only the site's own files and pages.

The site sets no cookies, and it loads nothing from other companies: no ad networks, analytics, social media widgets, or outside fonts.

What leaves your device

Your own profiles and test results only appear in a web address when you press Share. A share link or QR code carries the audiogram inside the link itself: the profile's name, the hearing levels for both ears, the genetic cause if you've marked one, and tinnitus settings. Anyone you send it to can see them. Notes you write about a profile aren't included.

When someone opens a share link, the profile stays in their browser. It's in the part of the link after the # sign, which browsers never send to a website, so it doesn't reach the site's host, Netlify, or its logs. Older share links put the profile after a ? instead (you can tell by ?p= in the link). They still work, but opening one sends the whole link to Netlify like any web address, and Netlify may keep it in standard request logs. The site never saves a share link. Links to the built-in profiles name the profile (for example, ?preset=noise_notch) and contain nothing about you.

When you paste a link into a messaging or social app, the app shows a preview and usually keeps a copy of it. For a link to one of your own profiles, that preview has only the site's name and the general Aurisma image, not your profile's name or audiogram. The link itself still carries them.

If a share link is posted somewhere public, like a forum or social media, search engines like Google may find it. Every page on this site tells search engines which address to list in their results, and for a share link, that's the plain simulator page, without your audiogram. Search engines generally respect this, but it's a request, not a guarantee, so if you'd rather keep your audiogram private, send the link directly to people instead of posting it publicly.

The contact form

If you send a message, the form sends your name, email address, and message to Netlify Forms, which stores it in the site's Netlify account, screens it for spam, and emails me a copy. I use it only to read and reply to your message. I don't add you to a mailing list, and I don't share or sell it.

Messages are kept until I delete them. If you'd like yours deleted sooner, ask me and I will. Nothing else from the site, like your profiles or test results, is attached to a message.

Visiting the site

Like any website, when your browser loads a page, the site's host receives standard technical information, such as your IP address, your browser type, and the page you asked for, and keeps it in server logs to run and secure the service. I don't use this to track or identify visitors. Netlify's handling of this data is covered by Netlify's privacy policy.

Your microphone

The site only uses your microphone when you choose Live mic or Record, and your browser asks your permission first. The sound is processed in memory and never uploaded or saved.

Health information

Audiograms and hearing test results are health information. Here they stay on your device unless you put them in a share link or type them into a message. Aurisma is an educational tool, not a medical service, and its hearing test isn't a diagnosis.

Children

Aurisma isn't aimed at children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child has sent a message through the contact form, let me know and I'll delete it.

Your choices

  • Delete what's on your device: use Erase all my data in Settings to remove your custom profiles, saved hearing tests, and settings at once. You can also delete saved tests one at a time on the hearing test page, or use Delete my custom profiles in Settings. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of that and the offline copy too.
  • Ask about or delete your messages: the only personal information I hold is contact form messages. Depending on where you live, you may have a legal right to see, correct, or delete it. You don't need to cite one; just ask through the contact form.

Changes

If anything here changes, I'll update this page and the date at the top.
